Knightstown is the
main village on Valentia Island, which lies off the coast of the
Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry. Valentia Island is linked to the
mainland by a bridge at Portmagee, as well as by a ferry (in the
summer months only) which sails from Reenard Point to Knightstown.
Knightstown is named after the local landlord, the Knight of Kerry,
who lived at Glanleam. His former home is now surrounded by
extensive sub-tropical gardens, which are open to the public. The
village is reminiscent of an Anglo-Irish Village with stately
buildings and a fine ambience. It is the main hub of activity on the
island. In the evening, people drift towards the harbour to share
news and a quiet pint in one of the local bars. The village offers
superb views of Valentia Harbour, Beginish Island and the mainland.
Knightstown is also the departure point for a variety of sightseeing
boat trips and fishing trip
Valentia Island itself has an exceptionally mild climate due to the
warm drift of the gulf stream and is suitable for all season
visitors. The island has great beauty and contrast with high cliffs
to the west and north providing sensational views onto the Kerry
Coastline and the Skellig Islands. |
