Portmagee is a very
quaint little fishing village on the South Western most tip of the
Iveragh peninsula, just off the Ring of Kerry. This pretty fishing
village lies close to the bridge which joins Valentia Island to the
mainland. Just across this bridge is 'The Skellig Experience'
centre.
Brightly coloured houses line the streets of this beautiful village
which was once a haven for pirates and smugglers. The village is
named after one of the most notorious smugglers of the 18th century,
Captain Theobald Magee. The village is now South West Kerry’s
principal fishing port and is renowned for its traditional pubs and
its unusual ‘Old Year’ festivities on New Year’s Eve each year.
These New Year celebrations, based on a unique 160 year old
tradition have a colourful history attached.
In close proximity to the town is the safe and secluded Reencaheragh
Strand and nearby is Illaunloughan, a small island which was
inhabited by monks in the early Christian times. Portmagee is the
traditional departure point to the unforgettable Skellig Islands,
the home of preserved monastic settlements from the 6th century. The
Skelligs are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Portmagee is within easy reach of a huge number of activities from
golfing to diving, for which the area is justly famous. |
