Waterville is a small
town on the Iveragh peninsula in County Kerry. The town is located
on a narrow isthmus, with Lough Currane on the east side of the
town, and Ballinskelligs Bay on the west, with the Currane River
connecting the two. It is the premier coastal tourist centre on the
Ring of Kerry.
The village has attracted many famous celebrities over the years,
such as Charlie Chaplin, Tiger Woods and Mark O’Meara to name but a
few! Whilst many tourists visit Waterville each year, it has managed
to remain a largely uncommercialised and traditional resort. It is
probably the best place for exploring the coast and mountainous
areas of South West Kerry. Being right beside the sea there is
plenty to do here, namely canoeing, sailing , diving and
horse-riding. The area is blessed with some of the most spectacular
scenery in Kerry and offers walkers and cyclists endless
possibilities for sightseeing and touring. The most scenic of the
many walks in the area has to be the walk up to the Coomakista Pass.
Although a long haul it is worth it for the beautiful views over the
mouth of the Kenmare River.
The town however is probably best known for its spectacular Golf
Courses. The Waterville Golf Links is rated in the top 5 in Ireland
and in the top 20 links courses in the world. The whole golf course
has a mystical aspect to it, overlooking Ballinskelligs Bay. This
course will require all the shots you can muster to conquer it. On
the other side of Waterville Village looking back over the town and
Lough Currane is the new Skellig Bay Golf Course. This is a
wonderful championship golf course built by the same developers who
shaped the Old Head of Kinsale Golf Course.
The sea surrounding the Iveragh penninsula is a rich fishing ground.
Charter boats available from Waterville, Ballinskelligs, Portmagee
and Knightstown ( Valentia Island ). For fishermen interested in
salmon and brown trout fishing, Lough Currane offers some of the
finest sea trout available in Ireland. Gillies and boat hire can be
arranged locally.
There is also a number of historical sites which have to be visited
including Staigue Fort, Cill Rialaig and nearby Derrynane House and
National Park - the birthplace of one of the most famous men in
Irish History - Daniel O'Connell. Other sites include the ancient
Stone Fort at Loher which dates back to the 8th or 9th century and
Church Island where the 6th century ruins of an Oratory was founded
by St. Finan. The artist, botanist and general holidaymaker will
also find numerous attractions to delight them. |
