Ballymore Eustace is
a picturesque town located in East Kildare, close to the Wicklow
border. It lies on the banks of the River Liffey close to the shores
of the Blessington Lakes.
The town is situated
just a few kilometres from the renowned Russborough House. This mid
18th century mansion is a fine example of Palladian architecture,
and houses the famous Beit art collection, much of which was donated
to the state by Sir Alfred Lane Beit, including works by Goya,
Vermeer and Rubens.
Because of its location and the proximity to both the River Liffey
and the Blessington Lakes angling is a very popular sport in
Ballymore Eustace. A permit is required to fish on the River Liffey.
The Blessington Lakes were created artificially in the 1940s by the
damming of the river at Poulaphouca, or the "Devil's hole". The
lakes, beautifully set in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains,
offers 5,000 acres of tranquil clean water. They have developed into
one of Ireland's most prominent fisheries with more than 10,000
brown trout over 1lb weight stocked here annually. Angling on the
lake is by boat or from the shore with easy access at many well
signed locations. In addition to being a a fisherman's dream, the
Blessington Lakes are also a boatman's paradise with sailing,
canoeing and windsurfing particularly popular.
