Castledermot is a
small town situated on the River Lerr amid the rolling hills and
farmland at the southern tip of County Kildare. It is 75km from
Dublin, and 10km from the town of Carlow.
This small riverside town has wonderful historic ruins that
transport the visitor back in time through hundreds of years.
Castledermot grew up around an early Christian monastery which
existed until the 12th Century. The monastic site is now occupied by
the church and churchyard of St James, where a reconstructed
Romanesque doorway remains in remembrance of the monastery. Also in
the churchyard are two magnificent granite high crosses decorated in
Celtic style and with carvings depicting incidents from The Bible.
Located here also is a 10th Century Round Tower which is more or
less complete. Nearby stand the stone-wall remains of a 13th Century
Franciscan friary. Indeed Castledermot is thought to be one of the
oldest Franciscan foundations in Ireland.
Just outside Castledermot is the luxury of Kilkea Castle, Ireland's
oldest inhabited castle, which is now a hotel with first-rate golf
and leisure facilities. Another fine local attraction, Mullaghrelan
Wood provides beautiful trails, a ring fort and a wishing well.
Castledermot is close to many amenities with golf at Kilkea, Athy,
Carlow, Mount Wolseley and racing at Gowran, Naas, Punchestown and
The Curragh. |
