Celbridge is a
growing town on the river Liffey about 19km from Dublin. This town
exudes charm and character. The River Liffey flows through the town
giving an air of peaceful, watery stillness.
Its main claim to fame is the spectacular Castletown House. Built
around 1722 for the speaker of the Irish House of Commons, William
Conolly, it is the largest and most significant Palladian style
country house in Ireland. This is now managed by the Office of
Public Works and is the headquarters of the Irish Georgian Society.
The building has been restored and equipped with Irish furniture and
paintings of the period. It is open to the public.
Celbridge Abbey was built by Bartholomew Van Homrigh, Lord Mayor of
Dublin in 1697. His daughter Vanessa planted the grounds for her
friend and admirer Jonathan Swift and a visit to the Grounds is a
must. There is the gardens, a model railway, Gulliver's snack bar, a
picnic area, theme walks, Gulliver's restaurant, a children's
playground, a garden centre. In addition, Celbridge Abbey is
wheelchair accessible and there is ample free car parking.
Celbridge Golf Club is a popular nine-hole parkland course. It
opened in 1997 and has earned rave reviews mainly thanks to its
excellent sand-based greens. It measures just under 6000 yards for
18 holes and has a par and standard scratch of 70.
Straffan lies 6km southwest of Celbridge and Straffan Steam Museum
has displays, models and full-sized working steam engines. Well
worth a visit also is The Straffan Butterfly Farm in nearby
Ovidstown. The K Club Golf Club is also located in Straffan.
Designed by Arnold Palmer, it has been the venue for the European
Open three years in a row and is well known throughout the golf
world.
Celbridge is the birthplace of Arthur Guinness, founder of the
