Clane is an
attractive town halfway between Maynooth and Naas in County Kildare.
The town is pleasantly situated by the River Liffey and the Grand
Canal is also nearby.
Clane town most probably owes its origin to the foundation of an
abbey in the 6th century. Clongowes Wood College, a secondary school
run by the Jesuit Fathers is located nearby; James Joyce was
educated there. Other places of interest include the Wogan Mausoleum
and the churchyard at Mainham.
Donadea Forest Park is located on the road to Kilcock from Clane.
This park is situated in the fertile lands of Kildare and is fairly
typical of demesne landscape. It comprises mixed woodland. The
nature trail is somewhat less than 2.5km long and winds through the
various natural and man-made elements that make up Donadea.
The Abbeyfield Equestrian Centre is located in Clane. This
equestrian centre caters for people of all ages and for all levels.
Private tuition can be arranged as well as the opportunity to hunt.
A must for all horse enthusiasts.
For a delicious range of cakes, meat, organic cheese, vegetables,
chutney, free range eggs, pies and craft work check out the Clane
Farmers Market which is held weekly on Fridays.
Clane is close to Mondello Racing Circuit, home to Irish Motor
Racing. There is a large choice of excellent golf courses within 15
minutes of the town, with the K Club , and Carlton House catering
for the championship level, while Craddockstown, Killeen, Woodlands
and Millicent Golf Clubs cater for the avid golfer. Clane is also
easily accessible to a number of amenities such as Punchestown, the
Curragh, Naas, Straffan, Kildare Shopping Village and the the
National Stud and Japanese Gardens.
