The picturesque town
of Kilcock is situated in North Kildare close to the Meath border,
about 30 km west of Dublin. The Royal Canal passes close to the
town. Kilcock is unique in that it holds the distinction of having a
river (the Rye), a road, a canal and a railway line all running
through the heart of the town.
The town's library features mementos of the poet Teresa Braydon who
was born in Kilbrook. The Old Bog Road, 4.5 km west of the town, was
the subject of her most successful verse. Kilcock Art Gallery was
established in 1978 by Breda Smyth and opened by George Campbell
R.H.A
Kilcock is home to the Larchill Arcadian Gardens, which includes 25
Hectares, gothic and classical follies, a walled garden and a a 3
hectare lake. Rare breeds of animals & poultry are on display. Tea
rooms, Gift Shop and toilets (disabled) are available.
With such close proximity to the Royal Canal it is no surprise that
Kilcock is the ideal village for canoeing. The International Canoe
Polo Competition takes place in Kilcock in September and attracts a
huge crowd.
Kilcock Golf Club is an 18 hole parkland course with some sweeping
undulations and features some beautiful trees. Fast undulating and
well manicured greens ensure Kilcock Golf Club is a test for the
best and the course is maintained to very high standards.
In addition to golf and canoeing Kilcock also offers the visitor a
wide choice of things to do with tennis courts, squash courts,
angling and horse riding facilities nearby. Although the town boasts
a wide array of amenities, it still retains an olde village charm
that is hard to find. |
