Kilcullen is an
historical town in south Kildare nestled between Naas (15 mins),
Newbridge (10 mins) and Blessington (15 mins) and is located just
off the M9/M7 motorway providing access to Dublin City (45km) and
surrounding counties.
Known officially as Kilcullen Bridge the village is perched on both
sides of the valley of the River Liffey, with a delightful riverside
walk. The town and its surroundings is steeped in history. Nearby at
New Abbey is the Portlester tomb, which carries sculptured effigies
of the 15th century Baron Portlester and his wife. At Old Kilcullen,
3 km to the south, are the remains of a round tower and three
ninth-century figured high crosses in granite; the west cross has
panels of figured scenes. Also near Kilcullen is Dun Ailinne ( now
Knockaulin), once a residence of Leinster kings.
Castlemartin is the home of Kilcullen's most famous residents, media
magnate Tony O'Reilly and his wife, horse-breeding shipping heiress
Chryss Goulandris. Harristown House in nearby Brannockstown was
built is the second half of the 18th century under the supervision
of the architect Whitmore Davis. It was rebuilt after a fire in the
1890's by James Franklin Fuller. Important features in the house are
the library, the furniture of French and Italian origin, and family
portraits. There are also chimneypieces, inlaid floors, mahogany
doors and Chinese wall paper. A half hour guided tour is available.
Group visits should be arranged in advance.
Kilcullen is about 7 km from the Curragh, the centre of Ireland's
horse racing industry and is home to the Aga Khan's horse breeding
operation, the Gilltown Stud. Horse-riding is available locally, and
horses can be stabled.
The Liffey at Kilcullen is known for trout angling. |
