Kildare Town, a
heritage town, is situated in west County Kildare just 45km east of
Dublin City.
This ancient cathedral town dates from the 5th century when it was
the site of the original Church of the Oak, a monastery founded by
St. Brigid. This became one of the three most important Christian
foundations in Celtic Ireland. Today St. Brigid's Cathedral and
Round Tower(8th Century) are major attractions in the town.
Kildare's other major attraction is The Irish National Stud and
Horse Museum and The Japanese Gardens and Visitor (the latter
situated in the grounds of the National Stud). The Japanese Gardens
symbolises the Life of Man while a new addition - St. Fiachra's
Gardens - was created to celebrate the Millennium. The National Stud
contributes to the bloodstock industry by providing the service of
top quality stallions to breeders. The history of the horse in
Ireland can be traced in the museum.
Kildare Town Heritage Centre is an exciting visitor attraction
situated in the Market Square. Located in the restored 18th century
market house the centre is a multi media exhibition venue telling
the story of Kildare past and present. Your host Cogitosus, a 7th
century monk, will take you on a captivating journey through time -
an audio visual presentation of the town from when St. Brigid
established her church in 480ad, to later centuries when Kildare was
raided by Vikings and later ruled by Normans.
Today, Kildare Town is regarded as the capital of Ireland's
bloodstock industry. There are numerous riding schools in the
locality as well as the famous Curragh Racecourse (8km). 'The
Curragh', as it is known locally, is the headquarters of flat horse
racing in Ireland with a history going back to the 3rd Century. All
five Classic Races including the Budweiser Irish Derby are held at
the Curragh each year.
A trip to Kildare Village Outlet Shopping makes an ideal shopping
getaway. The architecture of Kildare Village is inspired by the
region’s stud farms and world renowned thoroughbred horse-breeding
industry. Animated facades, a varied roofscape and rich landscaping,
all contained in an open air mall, provide the perfect setting for a
unique shopping experience
Dunmurray Springs Golf Club is an 18 hole championship golf course
located 3km from Kildare town. Dunmurry Springs is a unique place
