Leixlip is situated
on the banks of the River Liffey in north-east County Kildare. It is
located 17km west of Dublin City on the M4 and is County Kildare’s
youngest yet most populous town. Leixlip is surrounded by water. It
is here the River Liffey and the River Rye meet with the Royal Canal
also passing through the town. Leixlip is served by regular city bus
and suburban rail services from Dublin .
The Wonderful Barn, dating from 1743 was built as part of Castletown
Demesne, just west of Leixlip. This unusual 5 storey circular
building with a winding stone stairway around it, was built to
provide work for the poor. Another attractions in the locality is
St. Mary’s Church, which was built in the 12th century. Only the
tower survived an attack by Robert de Bruce in 1317. The clock on
the tower dates from the 18th century.
Leixlip Castle is a medieval castle on a rock above where the Rye
water flows into the river Liffey, partly rebuilt in the 18th
century and with an 18th century interior. The Castle is the home of
The Hon. Desmond Guinness, founder of the Irish Georgian Society and
son of one of the Mitford sisters
The Leixlip Festival (previously known as the Salmon Festival) takes
place every year on the June bank holiday weekend attracting
tourists from all over the world. It offers live entertainment in
pubs, a number of open-air concerts, and also a street carnival. A
fireworks display takes place on the Sunday night.
Leixlip is also a popular location for angling and canoeing. The
hydroelectric plant and dam allows the river to flood once a year
for the Annual Liffey Descent – a canoe race that attracts canoeists
from many nations.
The famous Carton Demesne is a 1,000 acre estate, located 6km west
of Leixlip. This is the location of Carton House Golf Club whic
consists of two championship courses: The Mark O'Meara Golf Course
and the Colin Montgomerie Golf Course. Also 6 km from Leixlip is the
fabulous Hermitage Golf Club in West Dublin. The world renowned K
Club is 15km from the town. |
