Maynooth is a
beautiful university town in North East County Kildare. It is an
18th century 'planned town', packed with history and an ideal base
for exploring the wealth of great houses, gardens and antiquities of
County Kildare. Maynooth is on the Royal Canal, navigable from
central Dublin to this point, now used mostly for leisure purposes.
At one end of Maynooth is Carton Demesne - a 1,000 acre estate. This
is the location of Carton House Golf Club whic consists of two
championship courses: The Mark O'Meara Golf Course and the Colin
Montgomerie Golf Course. At the other end of the town is Maynooth
Castle and Maynooth College. Maynooth College, founded as a Catholic
seminary just over 200 years ago, is an excellent day trip for
groups and families. The classically-styled college is now a
bustling university and the ruined castle at the gates of the
college was formerly the home of the Fitzgerald family. The history
of the college is explained fully through exhibitions at the visitor
Centre and Museum.
Castletown House and Gardens are just over 7km from Maynooth.
Castletown is Ireland's largest and earliest Palladian style house
and 120 acres of the demesne lands are still intact. The house was
built between 1722 and 1729 for William Connolly. It is open to the
public for the summer season.
Maynooth is located close to some of Irelands most prestigious golf
courses, in the heart of horse racing country and not forgetting
within easy driving distance of some of Irelands finest Shopping
Centres and Retail Outlets. |
