Moone is a small
historic village in south County Kildare close to the border with
County Carlow. It is located just off the N9 about 80km south of
Dublin.
Moone's most famous attribute is its granite High Cross, dating from
the 7th century. It can be found about 1 km from the town along the
road to Athy in the remains of an old Abbey believed to have been
established by Saint Colmcille. The cross itself, stands 17 feet
high and is one of the finest examples of high crosses in Ireland.
Moone, is close to two other small villages south of Kilcullen -
Timolin and Ballitore. This region of Kildare is rapidly growing as
a visitor centre and offers excellent fishing on the River Griese.
The Irish Pewtermill And Moone High Cross Centre is located in
Timolin. |
