Naas is located in
West County Kildare and is the county town of Kildare. It was
previously the seat of the Kings of Leinster,
Naas to-day is a rapidly growing dormitory suburb of Dublin and this
has resulted in its development as a thoroughly cosmopolitan town
with the best of shops, pubs, food and accommodation. For real
market atmosphere, visit Naas Farmers Market at The Storehouse
Restaurant every Saturday from 10 to 3pm.
On the outskirts of the town are two of the county's three
racecourses: Punchestown and Naas. Punchestown Racecourse is just to
the south east of the town and Naas Racecourse is about 1 km from
the town centre. The annual Punchestown Race Festival is a major
event for a whole week in April. The Oxegen music festival is also
held at Punchestown in the second weekend of July. The famous
Curragh Racecoure is only 15km from Naas.
Historical Naas to-day is centred on the main street, with its 19th
century buildings. The Catholic church, begun in 1827, has fine
architecture in several styles and an important collection of modern
art work dating from the 1980s. Moat Theatre in Naas is located in
an historic building which recently underwent extensive renovation.
It is now a state-of-the-art performance space with a varied and
lively programme, featuring the Moat Club's own drama productions,
visiting theatre groups, comedy, singer-songwriters, dance and art
exhibitions.
Craddockstown Golf Club situated on the outskirts on Naas is an
idyllic parkland course set in the beautiful surroundings of the
Kildare countryside. It provides a true test for golfers of any
standard with several signature holes surrounded by beautiful water
features. Naas Golf Club is located at Kerdiffstown near Naas. A
parkland course, with tree lined fairways and a number of water
features, it was founded in 1896.
Mondello - Ireland's premier racing track is located in Caragh ,
just 10 minutes from Naas. Throughout the year, Championship Car,
Kart and Bike races are held there. |
