Prosperous is a town
in northern County Kildare, situated on the main Clane/Edenderry
Road, 5kms from Clane, 10km from Naas and 40km from Dublin. The
Grand Canal flows past its outskirts and the River Liffey is within
a couple of miles of the town.
Prosperous was founded in the 18th century by Robert Brook with the
intention of creating a model industrial town based on the
production of cotton. Although none of the industrial buildings have
survived some late 18th century houses give the centre of the
village great character. Today the town is booming and has become a
residential centre for people based both in Dublin and in the North
Kildare region.
Prosperous has a range of tourism assets, including the Grand Canal,
Ballinafagh Lake and Bog and the Millennium Maze. It is also an
historic town with a wealth of richness in terms of built and
natural heritage. Prosperous Coarse Angling Club runs an annual
Fishing Festival in June.
A few miles north of Prosperous is Donadea Forest Park. This park is
open all year round and features loads of paths throughout the
forest. There is also a small lake with its own wildlife. The ruins
of Donadea Castle and a church can also be seen here.
Prosperous is also close to Mondello Racing Circuit, home to Irish
Motor Racing. |
