The village of
Rathangan is situated in West Kildare about 10 kms from Kildare town
and is located very close to the Offaly border. It is a tranquil
town on the bank of the Slate river and the Grand Canal providing
pleasant waterside walks and coarse angling.
Much of the present town was established soon after 1784 when the
Grand Canal was built southwards and thus the town’s unique layout
resulted as the houses were built for the canal engineers. A massive
earthworks near the Protestant church was the site of an early
Celtic fort, and a later Fitzgerald outpost
Just outside of the village is Lullymore Heritage and Discovery
Park. This wonderful park is set in the heart of Ireland’s largest
bog land, The Bog of Allen. The Park is a blend of history, nature
and fun. Historic Exhibits and replica houses tell the fascinating
story of the Irish People over nine millennia. Among the facilities
at the attraction are Heritage Exhibits, An Early Christian Centre
and a large playground.
Rathangan attracts numerous anglers to it's fine stretches of water.
There is plenty of opportunity for both walking and fishing.
Parachuting and trips on Canal Barges are among the interesting
things one can do in the town. |
