Robertstown is a
small village situated on the banks of the Grand Canal in County
Kildare, 12km from Naas.
The village grew in importance on the arrival of the canal, at the
highest level, 85m above sea level, in 1784. The former 'Grand Canal
Hotel' dominates this attractively situated village. It was built as
a stopping off point for passengers who travelled along the canal.
It ceased being a hotel in 1849 and was used as a barracks for the
Irish Constabulary between 1869 and 1905. It now houses a
restaurant, the Canal Heritage Centre, and an Art Gallery.
Besides the hotel and remnants of old warehouses, Robertstown has a
wealth of canal highlights. It is on the ‘summit level’ the highest
stretch of canal which descends from this point to east and west.
All the way along the Grand Canal the towpath, originally created
for the horses that pulled the barges, is maintained with great care
to make a delightful footpath, extending all the way from Dublin to
the River Shannon and to the town of Monasterevin.
Robertstown is close to many of the top attractions of County
Kildare. It is a great base for fishing due to its proximity to the
Grand Canal and the River Liffey and a host of smaller rivers in the
locality. This lovely canal-side village is a great centre for
exploring the canal and the neighbouring Bog of Allen. Golfing is
popular with 26 courses to choose from in County Kildare. Being in
the thoroughbred County, horseracing is a must and you can choose
from the Curragh, Naas or home of the national hunt in Punchestown.
Other attractions are a falconry, barge tours on the canal, and
walks on the canal towpaths. In August the village holds a Grand
Canal festival. |
