Ballyfoyle is a small
village located about 8km north of Kilkenny City about half way
between Kilkenny and Castlecomer.
Ballyfoyle is the site of a Purcell castle ruin and an imposing
circular moat. The Purcell clan built several castles in this
locality including Foulksrath Castle in nearby Jenkinstown
The famous Dunmore Caves is a limestone cave near Ballyfoyle
village. The caves are a deep chasm in an isolated crop of limestone
on the Castlecomer Plateau, overlooking the Dinn River. The cave was
anciently known as Dearc Fearna – “the Cavern of the Alders”, one of
the three darkest places in Ireland. Dunmore contains some of the
finest calcite formations found in any Irish cave.
The most important is
a 23ft stalagmite called the Market Cross - the tallest stalagmite
in Europe. Dunmore contains almost a quarter of a mile of passages
and at its deepest point is 150 foot below the surface. Although
this is smaller than many of the caves around Ireland, the beauty
and magic of its calcite formations as well as its scientific and
historical interest make it one of Ireland's most fascinating caves.
Exhibitions and displays about the Dunmore Caves can be found in the
Visitor Centre at Ballyfoyle.
Ballyrafton Wood is located near Ballyfoyle. Facilities in these
woods include riverside forest walks, picnic tables, seats, and free
car park. |
