The picturesque
village of Bennettsbridge is located on one of the most delightful
stretches of the river Nore, 9km south of Kilkenny City, on the main
road to Thomastown and New Ross. Located right in the heart of
County Kilkenny the village enjoys wonderful views of Mount Leinster
and the Black Stairs Mountains.
Bennettsbridge owes its name to Saint Bennet and to its strategic
importance as a crossing point of the river Nore. The first bridge
was built in 1285 and it was dedicated to the saint. The present
bridge was completed in the mid 18th Century. This landmark bridge
forms a focal point for the village. The River Nore itself is
renowned for its salmon, trout and fly-fishing.
County Kilkenny is famous for its crafts industry. The location of
the Crafts Council of Ireland in Kilkenny City, and the development
of the Grennan Mill craft college in Thomastown has promoted the
continued growth of the crafts industry throughout the county. This
has led to the creation of a successful craft trail. The Kilkenny
Craft Trail features nine retail outlets throughout the county, four
of which are located in Bennettsbridge. These include Chesneau
Leather Goods, ‘Moth to a Flame’ Handmade Candles, Keith Mosse
Woodworking and Nicholas Mosse Pottery. Several of these outlets are
located at the old mill beside the weir.
The Nore View Folk and Heritage Museum is located on the outskirts
of Bennettsbridge, overlooking the silvery waters of the river Nore.
This enchanting Museum houses a wonderful collection of objects of
Irish historical interest, including a history of the Penal Times,
the Great Famine, 1916 Rising and the War of Independence. It also
houses an old time kitchen, pub, forge, carpenters workshop,
threshing set and dairy as well as displays of old Irish transport
and a petrol station, all of which reflect the lives of the ordinary
people in Ireland long ago. There is also a fine display of old
musical instruments and bicycles and prams from days gone by.
Families will enjoy the Nore Valley Park Open Farm, where you can
help feed the animals and even handle chicks and rabbits. It als
features a 2 mile river walk, playground and picnic area
Bennettsbridge is only 8km from Thomastown. This is the location of
the renowned Mount Juliet Golf Club - a top rated Jack Nicklaus
designed championship course. |
