Callan is a small
heritage town in South County Killkenny close to the border with
Tipperary. It is located on King's River 16 km south of Kilkenny
City.
This ancient market town was founded by William the Marshal in 1217.
The town was strongly fortified in mediaeval times. There are some
remains of the 15th century Augustinian priory founded by Sir James
Butler, and traces of the castle which was bombarded by Cromwell in
1650. Callan's history is still to be seen in the fine churches and
medieval monuments and the important field monuments located in the
area. The seven square towers of Kells are just 10kms away.
Callan has connections with many famous people down through the
centuries. In the main street stands a handsome memorial in Kilkenny
limestone to Edmund Ignatius Rice (1762-1844), founder of the Irish
Christian Brothers. James Hoban, architect of the White House at
Washington. D.C., was born near Callan in 1762. Robert Fulton,
designer of the first steamship was also born here in 1765. Callan
is the ancestral home to the Candler Family, founders of the Coke
Cola company. Callan is also home to the only remaining family run
crystal factory in Ireland .. Kilkenny Crystal.
The Edmund Rice Heritage Centre is located near Callan. The thatched
house "Westcourt" in which Edmund was born is almost 300 years old.
Callan Golf Club is located just over 1km outside the town on the
Knocktopher road. This 18 hole parkland course features well placed
bunkers and hazards, with water featuring on 8 of the holes. The
course has a justifiable and well earned reputation for the high
standard of presentation and upkeep of both fairways and greens
With its location on the Kilkenny/Tipperary border, Callan is within
easy reach of the mediaeval Kilkenny City, Mount Juliet golf course
and Gowan racecourse. The town is an excellent base for touring the
South East of Ireland. For those interested in hill walking, it's
only a short drive to the slopes of Slievenamon. Fishing on the
nearby Nore, Suir and Kings rivers and the newly opened Castlecomer
Lakes stocked with Rainbow Trout are available for fishing
throughout the year. South Tipperary too has much to offer visitors
- Ormonde Castle, Carrick-on-Suir, Swiss Cottage, Cahir and the
famous Rock of Cashel are but a few of the must see attractions. |
