Castlecomer is a
picturesque town located in the hilly northern part of County
Kilkenny. It lies in a wooded valley where the river Dinin is joined
by a tributary from the west
Castlecomer takes it’s name from a castle built there during the
12th Century Anglo - Norman invasion. Today the attractive town
square contains many fine Georgian houses and is surrounded by
distinctive Lime trees. Castlecomer has always been the main market
town for north Kilkenny with several interesting shopping options.
More recently the focus on tourism has catapulted Castlecomer into a
genuine tourist attraction with a wide range of places to visit, eat
out and stay.
One of the main tourist attractions is the 18 hole Championship Golf
Course. Set in a 200 year old forest, Castlecomer Golf Course
provides a great test of golf combined with breath taking views of
the local terrain. The layout of the course is magnificent with tees
and greens built to USGA standards. Pat Ruddy is a much respected
golf course designer and he has created a truly unique experience in
the form of Castlecomer Golf Course.
Another major attraction is the Castlecomer Discovery Park - a
multi-activity forest park. This wonderful park occupies 80 acres of
mixed woodland, and boasts 6kms of walking trails, two Angling Lakes
and a children’s adventure playground. At the heart of the park is a
superb Visitor Centre with its interactive multimedia exhibition
‘Footprints in Coal’ which explores the geology and history of the
coal mines of Castlecomer - these disused mines were once the
country's largest coalfield.
The Discovery Park grounds are located around two rainbow trout
angling lakes. Fishing platforms have been constructed along the
west side of each lake to allow the best possible access to the
water. Both Lakes have been stocked with rainbow trout varying from
1 to 15 lbs. The upper lake can be used for bait fishing while the
lower lake is used for fly fishing. Fishing is available all year.
Castlecomer has also come to the fore on the craft front with the
recent opening of the Estate Yard Craft Centre. Castlecomer Estate
Yard was the farmyard, stables and kitchen gardens which provided
the fresh produce for the Wandesforde family . Today the stables are
home to some of Irelands top crafts people and artists. The Estate
Yard has a welcome for all visitors and allows them to veiw hand
cratfted work of the highest quality and meet the makers in person.
Further outside the immediate Castlecomer area you have Dunmore
Caves, Clogh Village, Jenkinstown Park, Timahoe Round Tower,
Kilkenny Castle and many more attractions. |
