Fiddown is a
picturesque village nestled along the Suir valley in South County
Kilkenny. The village is located on the borders of counties
Kilkenny, Waterford and Tipperary. It is centrally place among some
of the main towns in the South East of Ireland including Waterford,
Carrick-on-Suir, Clonmel and Kilkenny City
The name ‘Fiddown’ means ‘Place of the Ash Tree.’ Fiddown, is
bounded to the west by the Lingaun River. The broad span of the Suir
is negotiated here by a modern bridge, which joins the counties of
Kilkenny and Waterford. In olden times, the Bridge House of the
Fiddown Bridge collected tolls from would-be travellers and traffic.
Located near the village is the Fiddown Island Nature Reserve This
state owned Nature Reserve was established in 1988. Situated along
the River Suir it consists of a long narrow island of marsh/woodland
covered in willow scrub and bordered by reed swamps - it is the only
known site of its type in Ireland
Today Fiddown is a typical ‘New Ireland’ village, once a quiet rural
village; it has seen several housing developments of varying sizes
built over the last few years. Its cental location in the South East
makes it an ideal touring base for this part of the country. |
