Freshford is a
beautiful, picturesque, Georgian town lying below the Skieveardagh
hills just 14km North West of Kilkenny city.
This historic town has a fantastic green, surrounded by 52 chestnut
trees, benches to relax on and enjoy the tranquillity of the area.
On one corner of the green stands the Church of St Lachtain. This
church of Ireland has a richly decorated Irish Romanesque porch
incorporated into the present church in the 1100's. On another
corner of the green is the Catholic church. Ballylarkin Abbey near
Freshford was built in 1350 by the Shorthall Family. The abbey is
small in size but contains a wealth of splendid carvings and
architectural features.
On the last Sunday in October each year the village green becomes
the theatre of dreams for conker players. Once a schoolyard pastime
conkers is now a highly skilled, eagerly contested competition for
all age groups . Curious visitors arrive and soon become
participants in this ancient game. There are competitions for teams
and individuals from 8 years to grand-parents. For the less active
there is a huge alternative programme of events
Nuenna Farm Equestrian Centre is located near Freshford. This family
run equestrian centre has developed a fine reputation for the range
of facilities on offer. From the charming setting of the extensive,
cross country course to the large and well equipped indoor arena,
everything has been carefully planned to provide the best possible
enjoyment for each rider, novice or experienced, young or more
mature.
The Inchbeg Fishing School is located on the River Nore just outside
Freshford. This School offers tuition in wet and dry fly fishing on
private waters. A further 5km private stretch is available for
experienced fishermen. |
