Goresbridge is
located in the east County Kilkenny, on the Carlow-Kilkenny border.
It is situated on the west bank of the River Barrow in a shallow
valley associated with the River. Goresbridge lies approximately 20
kilometres east of Kilkenny city.
Goresbridge is named for the New Bridge built in 1756 by Colonel
Ralph Gore the first and last Earl of Ross. This graceful 9-arch
bridge remains of significant importance in the area for its
associations with the Battle of Goresbridge in June 1798. The bridge
joins Co. Carlow to Co. Kilkenny and lies between Upper and Lower
Ballyellen locks on the Barrrow.
