Gowran is a small
village located in eastern part of County Kilkenny. A tributary of
the river Nore flows south of the town. To the east across the River
Barrow lie the Blackstairs mountains which provide picturesque views
on leaving the town.
Gowran is one of Kilkenny's most picturesque villages, centred
around its medieval abbey and village green. The long main street of
Gowran is lined with fine period houses and cottages with Gowran
Castle at the top of the village. Gowran Castle is dated 1823 and
thought to be by the Kilkenny architect William Robertson. It must
be one of the last Palladian houses to be built – one hundred years
after the introduction of the style to Ireland.
Gowran has seen a proliferation of tourist amenities in recent years
including the development of the Gowran Park 18-hole golf course.
Designed by Jeff Howes Golf Design, the course is a wonderful
parkland golf course with tree-lined fairways and superb greens,
complemented by various water hazards, lakes and streams. The course
provides an excellent test for the low handicap golfer whilst also
being very enjoyable for the middle to high handicappers.
Just outside the town is the Gowran Park Racecourse which has been
the home of racing in Kilkenny since 1914 With 15 meetings
throughout the year, Gowran Park is the perfect place to enjoy the
excitement and spectacle of a day at the races. Dine in the rooftop
restaurant and experience the thrill of the horses crossing the
finishing line. This Grade A racecourse has had numerous famous
winners such as the legendary Arkle, Danoli, Hedgehunter and Kicking
King.
