Kells is a small
village in County Kilkenny located about 15km south of Kilkenny
City. It is situated on high ground to the south of the Kings River.
The ruins of a 12th century Augustinian Priory dominates the
landscape around the village. Kells Priory is one of the largest and
also one of the most magnificent medieval historic monuments in
Ireland. Scenically situated on the bank of the King's River, it is
a fine example of a fortified Augustinian priory. Its most striking
feature is a collection of medieval tower houses spaced at intervals
along and within walls which enclose a site of just over three
acres. These give the priory the appearance more of a fortress than
of a place of worship and from them comes its local name of "Seven
Castles". The priory is less than a kilometre from Kells village. If
you have some time to spare, there's a footbridge behind it, which
takes you across the river and intersects a riverside walk leading
to a picturesque old mill.
Milling has always played a prominent part in the history of Kells
village. At one point there were 16 mills in operation on a 5 mile
stretch of the Kings River. One of these mills has been restored and
is open to the public. This is Mullins Mill and it currently houses
a Mill Museum.
Kilree round tower and 9th century high cross, said to be the burial
place of Niall Caille, is located 4km southeast of Kells. |
