Mooncoin is a village
situated in the extreme south of County Kilkenny near the border's
of counties Waterford and Tipperary. It is located just over 10 km
north of Waterford City on the main Waterford to Limerick road. The
village lies in the valley of the River Suir on the eastern side of
the river. Mooncoin is ringed by uplands, with Slievenamon to the
northwest, an outlier of Slievenamon to the north and the Comeragh
Mountains to the west. This neat village has continually received
high scores in the National Tidy Towns competition.
Mooncoin has been made famous by the song ' The Rose of Mooncoin ',
which has been adopted as the Kilkenny G.A.A anthem. This is an apt
acknowledgement of the village, as Mooncoin was one of the leading
teams in the country in the early years of the G.A.A. ' The Rose of
Mooncoin ' was written in the 1800's by a local school teacher named
Watt Murphy. |
