Situated in the heart
of the sunny South East, Mullinavat is pleasantly situated in the
valley formed by the little Blackwater River, approximately 13
kilometres north of Waterford City
Mullinavat, in Irish Muileann an Bhata, means "mill of the stick".
Tradition has it that the name was derived from an ancient mill
which could only be approached by means of a rough stick over the
Glendonnel River, where the bridge on the main road is now beside
the Garda Station.
Local sights in the area include Tory Hill, Poulanassy Waterfall and
Leac an Scail. Tory Hill rises to a height of 966 ft above
sea-level. There is a pattern held each year on Tory Hill on the
second Sunday of July, known locally as Frochan Sunday. Excellent
views of five counties ( Kilkenny, Wexford, Waterford, Tipperary,
Carlow ) can be seen from the summit. Poulanassy Waterfall, where
the Blackwaer river falls over a shelf of rock, forms a pretty
cascade. It is situated a couple of miles from Mullinavat on the
road through Clonassy to Piltown and Carrick-on-Suir. Leac an Scail,
flagstone of the warrior, a magnificent Portal Dolmen, is at
Harristown bordering townsland of Kilmouge 8km from the village.
Mullinavat is surrounded by some excellent 18 hole courses. These
courses include Mount Juliet Golf Club and Waterford Castle Golf
Club - both less than 15km from the village. Mullinavat is also
located in close proximity to the rivers Suir, Nore and Barrow,
which have some of the best wild fishing in Ireland. The rivers Suir
and Nore are renowned for Salmon and trout. |
