Owning is a small
village situated in south West County Kilkenny near the borders with
counties Tipperary and Waterford. This beautiful village is located
against the bacdrop of heavily wooded hills. It is 8km from
Carrick-on-Suir, 25km from Waterford City and 35km from Kilkenny
City. The surrounding countryside is beautiful with views of the
Comeragh and Sliabh Na Mbhan Mountains.
The remains of a Gothic Anglo-Norman church are located in the
village opposite the present church. The Owning and nearby
Templeorum districts contain the richest store of ancient remains
dating from Neolithic to Anglo-Norman times of the whole County of
Kilkenny. In Owning Templeorum and Piltown there are many "Standing
Stones".
Some however have
been destroyed . These Stones are of Bronze Age. Their purpose
remains a mystery but may have been erected as boundaries and are to
be found near double ditches. In the Owning district there is the
portal tomb on Owning hill, in Carraiganaug wood, at Ballyhenebry
and at Kilionerry. |
