Piltown is a small
picturesque village situated in south West County Kilkenny near the
borders with counties Tipperary and Waterford. It is situated on the
banks of the Pill River, a tributary of the Suir, and nestles
between the undulating hills and forests of South Kilkenny and the
foothills of the Comeraghs in Waterford
Approaching Piltown from Carrick-on-Suir in the west is the landmark
of "the Tower" - Sham Castle - which forms a roundabout in the road.
This octagonal monument, dedicated to the son of Lord Bessborough ,
dates back to the Napoleonic era. Today its upper section serves as
a water tower. Piltown is also home to Ireland's largest
Horticultural and Agricultural College, Kildalton College
The area has many tourist attractions - nearby are the world
renowned High Crosses of Ahenny and Kilkieran. Just outside Piltown
is the famous Harristown Dolmen one of the largest dolmens in
Ireland. It is known locally as 'Leac an Scail', which means ‘stone
of the warrior’. This portal tomb has been constructed using a large
capstone resting on two large portal-stones and a pillow stone
resting on a back stone. The portal stones are around 14 ft high and
the capstone reaches 18 ft.
Piltown hosts a fair, called The Iverk Agricultural Show on the
first Thursday of every September. The show dates back to 1826 and
is now one of the largest agricultural shows in the country,
attracting competitors from all over Ireland, as well as from
England and Wales. It is very much a family occasion with plenty of
entertainment on hand to keep youngsters occupied. There is also a
serious side to the show with entrants competing for a prize in the
agricultural classes.
The Belline Equestrian Centre is located in Piltown. It is situated
in the beautiful setting of Belline Estate, beside the venue for the
Iverk Show. The centre offers riding lessons by qualified
instructors for all ages, with magnificent indoor and outdoor
facilities for instruction, hacking and trekking. The centre also
provides livery facilities.
The long-distance walking route The South Leinster Way passes
through Piltown and, on it’s way northward to Mullinavat, passes
Mountain Grove in the parish of Templeorum. |
