Slieveroe - also
known as Slieverue - is a small village in the far south east of
County Kilkenny on the border with County Waterford. The village of
Slieverue is approximately 3 kilometres from the River Suir and is
set within a broad valley associated with the River Suir estuary.
The village is also strategically located near the point where the
Rivers Suir, Barrow, and Nore come together. The village is just 4
km from Waterford City and 18 km from New Ross in County Wexford.
Despite close links with nearby Waterford city, the people of
Slieverue are fiercely proud of their Co. Kilkenny identity and
history.
Eigse Sliabh Rua is a week-long festival held in the village each
year. This is a festival of local history, music, poetry, outings,
talks,
storytelling and culture. Lectures are normally given by local
historians, and some guest lecturers. A small Irish language element
is introduced by Irish speakers at the festival.
Slieverue is the birthplace of the famous Irish scholar John
O'Donovan (1809-1861) who translated the ancient text Annals of the
Four Masters into English.
Slieveroe is an ideal base for exploring Ireland’s Sunny South East
with its many tourist attractions like the world renowned Waterford
Crystal Centre, Tramore’s Splashworld and Amusement Parks, Dunmore
East, Hook Head and many more. |
