Windgap is a small
village is located in the South Western part of Kilkenny on the
border with Tipperary just 10km south of Callan and 15km north of
Carrick-on-Suir.
Windgap was named for its location on a pass through hills east of
Slievenamon. The landscape of Windgap is dominated by steep hills
and large wooded areas. Windgap lies in a former slate-quarrying
district spanning the Kilkenny Tipperary border. The most notable
buildings in Windgap are its nineteenth century graveyard and an Old
League House which once served as a home for poor tenant farmers.
Nearby Kilmacoliver Hill (261m) dominates the landscape and the
summit of which is adorned by a circular enclosure of standing
stones. It is a curious burial ground - whether pagan or Christian
is not known. The megalithic structure is aligned with the setting
solstice sun and is visited by groups at mid winter and mid summer
day. |
