Ballickmoyler is a
small village in County Laois located some 30 km southeast of
Portlaoise and situated close to the Barrow River. The village has a
wonderfully central location with Carlow 8km, Athy 14km and Kilkenny
City 35km away.
Although a small village today, in the middle of the 17th Century,
Ballickmoyler was a considerable settlement. During the 1798 Rising,
it was a point of assembly for 600 pikemen and 200 riflemen of the
Queen's County Corps before their march on Graigue for the
disastrous Battle of Carlow. Half the village of Ballickmoyler lay
in ruins in the wake of '98. Adjacent to Ballickmoyler is the
townland of Cappalug, noteworthy as the location of what is possibly
the oldest surviving house in County Laois.
The Slieve Margy Way is a network of walking routes in south east
Couty Laois passing through many of its villages including
Ballickmoyler, Graiguecullen, Maganey, Arles, Rushes, Wolfhill and
the Swan. The total distance covered is 71 kilometres but you can
choose to walk many shorter sections and in either direction. Nature
lovers will also enjoy forest trails located in the vicinity of
Ballickmoyler. |
