Ballinakill is a
small village in South East County Laois.
With its broad main street and central square Ballinakill is an
excellent example of a 17th century Irish market town. The ruins of
Ballinakill Castle are of a late 17th century vintage built by the
Dunnes on the site of a castle destroyed by Cromwellian troops. The
town's entrance from the Abbeyleix direction is marked by two trees
known as Toll Trees where a toll was paid by visitors to the town. A
monument in the square is dedicated to the local men who died in the
1798 rebellion.
Just outside Ballinakill is the beautiful Heywood Gardens. These
gardens were landscaped in the 18th century and completed by Sir
Edwin Lutyens in 1912. They consist of a series of interlinked
formal gardens. lakes, woodland, and a variety of architectural
features. The gardens are now under the care of Dúchas, the Heritage
Service and are open all year round, free of charge.
Gills Pond and Mass Lough near Ballinakill are two small lakes with
superb angling in a beautiful setting, providing good pike, tench
and rudd angling.
The Noel Duggan Memorial Vintage and Classic Show is held in
Ballinakill each July. It features a display of cars, tractors,
motorcycles and equipment dating back to as far as 1910. There is
also music and entertainment for all the family. |
