Ballybrittas is a
small village in the northeast of County Laois, situated 10km south
of Portarlington and about 5km south east of Monasterevin in nearby
County Kildare.
The village's name means ' town of the fortified place'.
Ballybrittas is a quintessential Irish village with a relaxing and
elegant country atmosphere which could almost make one forget that
the outside world is just on the doorstep. The village boasts a
quaint thatched cottage museum which provides an informative insight
into Irish peasant life 200 years ago.
Situated in the beautiful countryside surrrounding Ballybrittas are
some of Irelands finest stately homes including Mount Henry,
Glenmalire, Gracefield, Woodbrook, Rath House, and Graigavern. 5km
west of Ballybrittas is Emo Court. This elegant building was
designed by the renowned architect James Gandon in 1790 for the
Earls of Portarlington and is a magnificent example of this
neo-classical style. The house is surrounded by beautiful gardens
which were first laid out in the 18th century and contain formal
lawns, a lake and woodland walks with many very fine trees and
shrubs. The house and gardens were taken into State ownership in
1994 and are open to the public throughout the year.
In nearby Killenard just 3km from Ballybrittas is the wonderful
Heritage 5 Star Golf and Spa Resort. This unique resort features the
superb Seve Ballesteros and Jeff Howes co-designed 18 hole
championship golf course combined with the Seve Ballesteros
“Natural“ Golf School. |
