Ballyfin is a village
in the heart of County Laois located mid way between the towns of
Mountmellick and Mountrath.
The village is situated in the Slieve Bloom Mountains, a beautiful
unspoilt mountain range, rising up from the central plains of
Ireland. The gentle rolling hills of the Slieve Blooms offer a
tranquil retreat from the bustling modern world. Ancient blanket
bog, dark green forests with trails, picnic and amenity areas,
crystal-clear streams and long deep glens edged with peaceful
villages make this 155,400 hectare area a delightful touring
destination for hill walkers and cyclists.
The countryside around Ballyfin has some fine tourist attractions
such as The Cathole Falls, Ballyfin House and numerous buildings
dating from the Georgian era. Ballyfin House is reputedly one of the
finest neoclassical houses in the country. It was built in 1820s
with Slieve Bloom sandstone and is currently being redeveloped as a
luxury hotel.
Ballyfin Lake contains pike, tench and rudd. A beautiful lake set in
the grounds of Ballyfin House, it is popular spot for locals and
tourists alike. |
