Donaghmore is a small
village in South west County Laois situated close to the border with
County Tipperary. This picturesque village is on the road from
Rathdowney to Borris in Ossory and lies on the banks of the River
Erkina, a tributary of the Nore. It has attractive buildings and two
thriving pubs overlooking the river and an old bridge.
Donaghmore was originally associated with an early medieval church,
and then with a Norman fortification. It later became an extensive
industrial complex in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
A short distance northwest of the village is the headquarters of
Donaghmore Co-op, once a workhouse, and now also housing a museum -
the Donaghmore Famine Workhouse Museum. This unique attraction aims
to tell the story of the families who lived and died within the
Famine Workhouse walls before, during and after the Great Famine.
The Museum uses guided and self-guided tours combined with various
exhibits to explain the socio-economic conditions which led to the
establishment of this and other Workhouses.
There are five 18 Hole Golf Courses within easy driving distance of
Donaghmore - at Rathdowney, Abbeyleix, Mountrath, Roscrea and The
Heath. There is fishing on rivers Erkina, Nore, and Granstown Lake.
Donaghmore is also a good base for walking in the Slieve Bloom
Mountains, or on marked woodland walks in the Cullohill Mountains or
at Granstown Lake.
Donaghmore was the setting for the film 'All Things Bright And
Beautiful' which included such stars as Gabriel Byrne and Tom
Wilkinson. |
