Durrow is a town
located in South County Laois, 22km south of Portlaois and 8km south
of Abbeyleix.
This beautiful planned estate village was developed under the
patronage of the Viscounts Ashbrook. It features fine Georgian and
Victorian buildings including Castle Durrow, one of the last
pre-Palladian houses built in Ireland. Durrow Castle is set in its
own demesne in the centre of the town. Perhaps the towns finest
feature is the suite of buildings around the Green under the gates
and battlement wall of the castle.
The River Erkina flows through Durrow meeting with the River Nore
just south of the town. Mature trees and wooded areas enhance the
character of the town and help to blend the town into the
surrounding hilly landscape. This landscape is the setting for The
Leafy Loops Walk - a 20km series of way-marked walking routes around
the town.
Durrow is a town with a rich angling pedigree. With five rivers
within a 2km of the town and Grantstown Lake located just 6km away,
the visiting angler is truly spoiled for choice. The river Nore runs
just east of Durrow. The river is renowned for it’s natural wild
brown trout and it’s wonderful mixture of deep pools and fast
rapids.
The Irish Fly Fishing and Game Shooting Museum is located in an old
farmhouse in Attanagh, a quaint village just outside Durrow. The
Museum has a collection of over five thousand fishing and shooting
related artefacts. It is the only Museum of its kind in Ireland
presenting and interpreting fishing and shooting and Country life
activities.
The "Howya" Festival - Ireland's Only Festival of Friendships is now
held in Durrow annually. This festival replaces what used to be the
carnival in Durrow, taking place since the 1950s. The idea behind
the festival is to encourage people to celebrate their friendships
and for people who have left to come back and renew old friendships. |
