Emo is a village in
North East County Laois located 10km north east of Portlaoise Town.
This small 18th century estate village is synonymous with the famous
18th century architect James Gandon. Two superb examples of his work
are located in Emo - Coolbanagher Church and, perhaps more
significantly, Emo Court. Emo Court is a country villa in
neo-classical style designed by Gandon , best known for his great
public buildings, including the Custom House and the Four Courts in
Dublin. The house is surrounded by beautiful gardens and parkland
and contains formal lawns, a lake and woodland walks with many very
fine trees and shrubs. Emo Court is owned and managed by the Office
of Public Works. visitors come from far and wide to admire it's
architectural splendour and to relax in the majestic grounds
surrounding this historic mansion.
The Laois Craft Centre and workshop is located at the entrance to
the beautiful Heritage Site of Emo Park Wood. This idyllic location
surrounded by trees, shrubs and wildlife is only 2km from Emo Court.
The centre has hand-produced items from almost 20 craftspeople,
mainly from Laois but also some other areas. |
