Portarlington, is a
town in North East County Laois in the midlands of Ireland.
Portarlington lies on the border of County Laois and County Offaly.
The County Boundary is formed by the River Barrow, which flows
immediately west of the town centre.
Portarlington was founded in 1666 in a bend of the Barrow River by
Sir Henry Bennett, Lord Arlington. After the Jacoite wars, the lands
were given to General Rouvigney, Earl of Galway who brought a colony
of French Huguenots to the town. Today Portarlington is a charming
riverside town with an interesting variety of architecture-
Georgian, Huguenot and Victorian. A French Festival is held in July
each year reflecting the towns heritage.
Portarlington Golf Club is a magnificent 6,000 meters golf course
set in mature parkland. The River Barrow makes the closing holes
amongst the toughest in the midlands region. Portarlington Golf Club
is also widely acclaimed as the friendliest club in this part of
Ireland. The Heritage Golf Club is located in Killenard 5km south
east of Portarlington. Seve Ballesteros and Jeff Howes co-designed
this superb 18 hole championship golf course combined with the Seve
Ballesteros “Natural“ Golf School.
The River Barrow is internationally renowned for Salmon and trout.
The Figile river near Portarlington is a gem of river for pike
anglers holding specimen fish of 30lbs and over. Close by are the
Cushina, Slate and the Black Rivers which also spoil the angler for
choice. Derryounce Lake, just 2km outside Portarlington on the
Edenderry road, is a lake of approximately 40 acres with excellent
food supplies for brown and rainbow trout.
Admirers of the architect James Gandon should visit the Palladian
style Emo Court located just 6km south of Portarlington The house
was originally designed for the first Earl of Portarlington. When he
died during the 1798 rebellion, an English architect completed the
building, assisted by two Dublin architects who worked on the
interior. Today the house and gardens of Emo Court are owned by the
state and open to the public. |
