Timahoe is a village
in County Laois, 12 km south of Portlaoise.
The village of Timahoe is beautifully situated in a broad and
fertile valley, underneath Fossy Mountain on one side and Cullenagh
Mountain on the other. The houses are built around a large central
green commonly known as the Goosegreen. The river Bauteogue meanders
between the Goosegreen and the 7th century monastic site founded by
Saint Mochua.
Guarding this village is a 12th century Round Tower standing 30
metres high The Timahoe round tower is a complete tower, though
without floors or ladders. It has one of the finest four-order
Romanesque doorways in Ireland, with elaborately carved and
decorated with interlace, human heads, chevrons and capitals. It is
unique in round tower architecture. The round tower stands in a
lovely park-like setting across a pretty footbridge that crosses the
Bauteogue river in the centre of the village |
