Ballinaglera - or
Ballinagleragh - is a small village located in the heart of County
Leitrim. It is situated on the north eastern shores of Lough Allen
about 4 km south of the village of Dowra.
Ballinaglera is the location of the Lough Allen Adventure Centre.
The centre is situated on the shores of Lough Allen. These shores
are surrounded by the Slieve Anerin mountain range to the east and
the Arigna hills to the west. These hills combine to provide a
funnel wind effect making the lake an ideal location for
windsurfing.
An interesting feature which is almost unique to Ireland and very
common in the parish of Ballinaglera is the existence of
sweathouses. Sweathouses were an old remedy for back aches
rheumatism, sciatica, etc - effectively they were like an old-time
sauna! Just off the Leitrim Way near Ballinaglera you will come
across a sweathouse in very good condition. The secrecy and
seclusion of the site makes for a lovely place to stop. |
