Ballinamore is a
small town in the mid eastern part of County Leitrim. The name
Ballinamore means "mouth of the big ford". The town is so named
because it was the main crossing point of the Yellow River, which
flows past the town. This waterway become known as the
Ballinamore-Ballyconnell canal, built to link the Rivers Erne and
Shannon in the 1840s. It reopened as the Shannon-Erne Waterway in
1994
With a central location in County Leitrim Ballinamore offers
breathtaking drives and pleasant walks in unspoilt countryside. The
town is one of Irelands best developed angling centres located in
one of the "big catch" Lakeland Districts. There are a minimum of 40
lakes within a 10km radius of the town as well as the beautifully
restored canal. This abundance of coarse angling waters has put
Ballinamore firmly on the international angling map.
Ballinamore also boasts one of the few golf courses in County
Leitrim The Ballinamore Golf Club has established itself as one of
the finest nine-hole courses in the country. Since its redevelopment
was completed a number of years ago the club and course has proved
popular with locals and many visitors. The course stretches along
the banks of the Ballinamore/Ballyconnell Canal.
Drumcoura City Lake Resort is a Western style ranch overlooking the
beautiful lake Drumcour 3km ouside Ballinamore. This resort is
surrounded by mountains and hills. It features a "Cowboy Style"
ranch which caters for the experienced and novice horserider. There
are a variety of courses and trails, American Quarterhorses,the best
riding arenas and round-pen facilities, a Western style Saloon Bar
and Restaurant with live music on a regular basis.
Located on the Shannon Erne link 10km south east of Ballinamore is
Swan Island - a must see attraction. Swan Island is located on the
southern side of Gardice Lake and is looking directly out to Church
Island. At this wonderful trekking and open farm facility you can
enjoy a different experience in tranquil surroundings. With over 50
species of animals, Swan Island will surprise and delight you
whatever your age! Facilities include playground, marina,
restaurant, picnic area and souvenir/confectionery shop. The
Trekking Centre has treks from 1 hour up to 3 hours with horses to
suite all stages of rider.
With a prime location on the Shannon-Erne waterway system
