Carrick-on-Shannon is
the county town of Leitrim. It is situated in the western part of
the county on the banks of the River Shannon close to the border
with County Roscommon.
Carrick-on-Shannon or Carrick as it is known locally is a vibrant
town. It is the boating capital of the inland waterways of Ireland
and boasts a number of modern marinas and harbours. It is the most
northerly hire base on the Shannon. The town is also home to the
regional office of the new All Ireland Waterway Authority.
Carrick-on-Shannon is widely regarded as an anglers paradise and has
hosted both National and International Fishing Competitions on a
regular basis. Within a 10km radius of the town there are no fewer
than 41 lakes. It is the ideal base for the visiting angler with
good fishing, entertainment, forest walks and boating readily
available. On the river Shannon itself roach can be caught at
Battlebridge, Hartley, Jamestown and Drumsna, not to forget downtown
Carrick itself. Lough Aduff and Tully are noted for large tench.
Carrickport Lake, Bog Lake and Lough Bran boast big shoals of bream.
Bait, tackle, boats and detailed maps are all available locally
The town itself is steeped in history and visitors are recommended
to take a walk through the town to discover its interesting
historical buildings, in particular the Costello chapel which is
believed to be the smallest chapel in Europe. Carrick-on-Shannon
offers a wide variety of night-time entertainment and boasts many
talented musicians, providing lively sessions in local hostelries
The Carrick-on-Shannon Golf Course is situated on the outskirts of
the town. This excellent 18-hole parkland course, constructed to the
highest USGA specifications, is located by the banks of the Shannon
with the the Argina Mountains in the background. It is a beautiful
location for a golf outing, whether it is a sociable fourball,
society or corporate outing.
The Dock is a multi purpose arts centre in Carrick on Shannon and is
housed in a beautifully renovated 19th Century courthouse building
overlooking the river Shannon. The Dock contains an intimate theatre
space with regular performances of music, comedy, theatre and more;
three art galleries with monthly exhibitions showcasing the best of
local, national and international work; artists' studios, workshop
spaces, a coffee shop and theatre bar. It also houses the The
Leitrim Design House. This is an award winning craft and design
outlet which strives to represent a positive cultural image of
Leitrim, synonymous with quality craft, visual art and design.
Since its inception in 2005, the Carrick Water Music Festival has
brought a wide range of musical talent to Carrick-on-Shannon. This
musical event normally features over 20 acts from a broad range of
musical genres, including Classical, Opera, Jazz, Folk and
Traditional. |
