The village of Dowra
sits on the border of Counties Leitrim and Cavan where the province
of Ulster meets the province of Connacht. The village overlooks
Lough Allen, one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in Ireland.
The River Shannon source is located at the Shannon Pot, 152m above
sea level on Cuilcagh Mountain near Dowra. Dowra is the first
village on this majestic river on its long journey south to Limerick
and eventually the Atlantic Ocean.
Dowra is also a walker's paradise. The national waymarked routes,
the Leitrim Way and the Cavan Way converge in the village. There's
an Outdoor Pursuits Centre 5km away in Ballinaglera on the shores of
Lough Allen featuring activities such as swimming, canoeing,
windsurfing and yachting.
Anglers are well-catered for in a number of fishing centres in the
locality. Moneen Lough And Ardlougher Lough are two small lakes are
near Dowra. They each hold a stock of brown trout. The fishing here
is regarded as free.
The ancient fortification known as the Black Pig's Dyke, which is
thought to have divided the country in two, is located in Dowra. |
