Dromahair is a
picturesque village in north County Leitrim. It is situated in quiet
surroundings on the banks of the Bonet River at its entry point to
Lough Gill. The village is 10 km from Manorhamilton and just 17 km
from Sligo town.
Dromahair has an interesting history and is the site of a castle
which belonged to the O’Rourke’s of Breffni. The ruins of Creevlea
Abbey are situated just outside the village. It was built in 1508 at
the instigation of Margaret O’Rourke and was the last friary to be
built before the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. A
particularly nice riverside walk brings you to the ruins of this
Abbey.
The drive from Dromahair to Parkes Castle, along the shores of Lough
Gill, is wonderfully scenic. Once an important stronghold of the
local O'Rourke family, Parkes Castle has been recently restored to
its original 17th century style. A guided tour of the castle is
given every hour. In the castle there is a traditional blacksmith
forge of 17th century style as well as café and tea rooms with
home-made fare.
The Wild Rose Waterbus operates on one of the most beautiful and
scenic lakes in Ireland, Lough Gill. This majestic all-weather craft
travels between historic Parkes Castle near Dromahair right into the
centre of Sligo town. En route the Wild Rose takes in the famous
"Isle of Innisfree".
The Bonet River rises in Glenade Lough, County Leitrim and flows
through Manorhamilton and Dromahair into Lough Gill. It provides
excellent salmon fishing in spring, summer and autumn and also holds
good stocks of brown trout. |
