The picturesque
village of Drumshanbo is located on the southern shores of Lough
Allen in heart of County Leitrim. It lies between the slopes of
Sliabh-an-Iarainn towering to the north and the Arigna mountains to
the west. Drumshanbo is surrounded by a scenic area of soft rolling
drumlin hills, woodlands and lakes. It is a quaint village with
traditional pubs, shops and restaurants.
In the centre of the town there is the Sliabh an Iarann visitors'
centre. This centre informs the visitor about everyday life,
transport and industry between the Arigna and Sliabh an Iarainn
mountains - the railway, canal, lakes, iron and coal mining. The
Centre has a display showing miners at work and also has a
reconstruction of a sweat house which was used in days gone by as a
cure for aches and pains.
Drumshanbo's position at the southern end of Lough Allen makes it an
ideal angling resort. Lough Allen is the largest lake in Leitrim and
has a good reputation for coarse angling. The lake has a plentiful
supply of trout, pike, rudd, perch and roach. There is also an
abundance of good fishing on small lakes throughout the surrounding
area. It is also possible to rent cruisers to navigate the waterways
and enjoy the natural unspoilt countryside of the area. Lough Allen
has become a popular venue for wind surfing, canoeing and other
water sports.
Drumshanbo is famous for its musical tradition and is in the heart
of a traditional Irish music area. During the third week of July
each year the town hosts the Joe Mooney Summer School for Irish
Music. This well established festival attracts Irish music
enthusiasts from all over the world.
A feature of the town is its unique High Street fronted by a stone
wall, with stone steps leading up to Ireland's shortest Main Street.
Acres Lake Amenity Area, adjoining the cruisers jetty, has excellent
facilities including a heated outdoor swimming pool.
