Manorhamilton is the
largest town in north County Leitrim. It is located in the centre of
the North Leitrim Glens region which is renowned for its
hill-walking. The town also has a central location among 3 of the
largest lakes in this part of Ireland - Lough Gill, Lough Melvin and
Lough Allen.
Manorhamilton is a town with a large number of historical sights and
buildings some dating back to 1634 when Sir Frederick Hamilton built
his castle and from which the town got its name. The ruins of the
Castle have recently been impressively renovated transforming it
into a fascinating tourist attraction. Manorhamilton Castle Heritage
Centre hosts a permanent exhibition and offers guided tours of the
Castle ruins and grounds.
The North Leitrim Glens Visitor Centre in the town provides
information to tourists on walks and sights of interest in the area.
Throughout the year it also runs an exciting programme of events
including drama, music etc. The town has a Sculpture Centre which
provides courses and training to students from Ireland and abroad.
The Wild Rose and Thorn Festival brings large crowds to
Manorhamilton in August each year. The festival features a
light-hearted and humorous talent competition to choose a Rose & a
Thorn as well as on-street gigs and entertainment in a carnival
atmosphere.
Headquartered in Manorhamilton, The Greenbox is Ireland's first
integrated ecotourism destination. The area of the Greenbox includes
Counties Fermanagh, Leitrim, West Cavan, North Sligo, South Donegal
and North West Monaghan. The organisation is involved in the
development and promotion of eco breaks and hundreds of other
activities.
The Lisdarush Ring Fort can be seen off the Rossinver road
approximately 2 miles from Manorhamilton.
