Mohill is a town in
south County Leitrim. This lively market town lies east of the River
Shannon and is built on a slope toward the Rinn River.
The town is centred on a cross-road of the Main Street and the
principal cross streets of Glebe Street and Hyde Street. Hyde Street
is named for Douglas Hyde, first President of Ireland, whose father
and grandfather lived on the street and who spent part of his
childhood in the town. In the town there is a remnant of an
important Monastery founded in 608 by St. Manchan. The statue in the
centre of Mohill commemorates O'Carolan who is particularly
associated with this area. Lough Rynn House and Gardens, former home
of the Earls of Leitrim is located nearby. Farnaught Limekiln
is a 19th century limekiln is situated in this estate.
Mohill has a proud reputation as a coarse angling centre. It is
situated in the Rynn Valley with a large number of excellent fishing
waters within a 10km radius. Among the best lakes in the area are
Lough Rynn, Greenagh Lake, Lough MacHugh, Cloonbonaigh Lake and
Lough Erril. All of these lakes are easily accessed and all the
waters are signposted well. |
