Abbeyfeale is a
historic market town in South West County Limerick near the border
with County Kerry. It is located some 21 km from Newcastle West on
the the main road from Limerick to Tralee.
Abbeyfeale is situated on the banks of the river Feale and is
Limerick's gateway to Tralee, Killarney and the Dingle Peninsula.
Its location makes it an ideal base to tour not only counties Kerry
and Limerick but also County Clare - the car ferry at Tarbert is
just 30km away.
Visitor attractions in the locality include Crag Cave. Discovered in
1983 and thought to be over one million years old Crag Cave is a
magical wonderland of stalagmites and stalactites. It is an all
weather visitor attraction located 19km south west of Abbeyfeale on
the road to Castleisland.
For walkers the Great Southern Trail is a unique 80km stretch of
countryside in the West Limerick / North Kerry region which passes
through Abbeyfeale. The route follows the old Limerick - Tralee
railway line, which opened in 1867 / 1880 and closed in 1975 / 1977.
It allows visitors to the area to explore this beautiful region in a
safe, leisurely way by foot or bicycle.
Abbeyfeale Golf Club is a picturesque 9 hole parkland golf course
set in the scenic West Limerick countryside. The course was designed
by the renowned golf course architect Dr. Arthur Spring and is
suitable for golfers of all levels. Just 30km west of Abbeyfeale is
the world famous Ballybunion Golf Links in County Kerry.
Abbeyfeale is home to Abbeyspeedway which is currently the largest
karting track in Munster. Also close to the town is Fitzgeralds
Farmhouse & Equestrian Centre which has a wide range of horses
suiting both the beginner and advanced rider.
The May Bank Holiday weekend sees the town host the "Fleadh by the
Feale" traditional music festival. |
